Just nu har jag upplevt årets varmaste dag, trots det kan jag inte släppa resan med PolarQuest till Svalbard som jag kom hem från för tre veckor sedan.

De rutinerade rävarna som besökt ögruppen tidigare pratar om den arktiska bacillen, jag fick den också, den vill inte släppa taget och jag återkommer gång på gång med att tänka på dessa nätter i fullt dagsljus när båten tog oss in i den ena fjorden efter den andra. Jag satt som klistrad bakom kikaren och kunde inte se mig mätt. Midnattsolen går inte att beskrivas utan måste upplevas. Den här spektakulära vildmarken bländade mig med sina gnistrande glaciärer, vackra fjordlandskap och dramatiska bergskedjor.

Ett mål med resan var att hjälpa till med Clean up Svalbard som PolarQuest är väldigt engagerad i, nu var det snö och is överallt, så vi lyckas inte hitta mycket skräp på stränderna, men det som göms i snö…
Däremot så var PolarQuest med guiderna Zet och Adrian som fanbärare aktiva under  World Enviroment Day och Beat Plastic Pollution och den 5 juni arrangerade de ett Ploggaevent på Svalbard.

PolarQuest har alltid varit aktiva skräpsamlare på Svalbard under våra resor. Vi har deltagit i Sysselmans projekt Clean Up Svalbard sedan dess start och PolarQuests guider och gäster ser skräpsamling som en helt naturlig del av att vara ute på expedition. Nedskräpningen från haven är ett stort problem för fåglar och djur, säger PolarQuest Vd Marie Lannborn Barker

Ur min dagbok den 8 maj: 
”Passerar den bergiga ön Karl XII, tänk att André och hans två mannar har passerade över det här 1897 och hade ingen aning hur det skulle gå. Tänk också att ballongen inte hade något egen vätgasbränsle utan förlitade sig på det de hade i ballongen.  Inte konstigt att det gick som det gick.

Mitt i Eriiks, en våra guiders presentationen så stannande båten mitt bland uppbrutna isblock och där låg en enorm valross och stirrade ointresserat och med trötta ögon på oss. Vi upptäckte en annan grupp valrossar från bryggan och vi lägger i Zodiacerna.  Ska vi  lyckas komma i land eller inte? Iskanten hur hög är den? Är det mjuk snö på den platta ön eller inte? Det var inga problem. Zet går iland med geväret i högsta hugg, tydligen ligger ofta isbjörnar i lä bakom en sten eller snöblock och kan dyka upp lite när som helst. Zodiackerna  läggs ute på ankar och vi går runt valrossarna så det inte har vår lukt i ansiktet. Det ligger en hög med valrossar, helt ointresserade av oss, en del på rygg, andra på mage, skön samhörighet.
Det börjar snöa och blåsa och vi åker tillbaks till moderskeppet. Det bjuds på rom och varm choklad direkt vid landgången, besättningen förstår att vi är kalla.

På båten bjudes det som vanligt på trerätters middag. Guiderna kör en briefieng om dagen och Manda pratar om stormfåglar och extra intressantast var att ungarna spottar ut ett slags slem om dom bli angripna. Båten gör en 180 graders vändning från blåsigt hav och så klarnar det upp och vi får underbart väder och isbergen blir sådär otroligt vackra igen.  Är det isbjörn vi ser där bort vid iskanten…”

Räkna med att jag kommer tillbaks. Jag är fast! Tack för den här sjukdomen, den är permanent och jag kommer aldrig vaccinera mig mot den artiska bacillen.
