Hur började ditt friluftsintresse?
Mitt friluftsintresse började redan när jag som elvaåring gick med i scouterna. Jag älskade att fiska och tog alla möjligheter att vara ute och äventyra!
Du som har erfarenheter från flera länder, hur är det att guida i Sverige?
Efter sexton år med jobb för the Royal Air Force (RAF) bestämde vi (jag och min sambo) oss för att Sverige nog kunde erbjuda den livsstil vi sökte och dessutom ge goda möjligheter för mig att jobba som guide. Nu bor vi på en liten gård med våra barn, hästar och får.
Givet att hela den svenska befolkningen får plats innanför motorvägen som omger London så måste jag säga att jag är ett stort fan av att det finns så mycket orörd natur här och även av friluftskulturen som finns i Sverige. Variationen av olika skogstyper, berg, floder och hav i kombination med Allemansrätten är helt perfekt för guideyrket!
När började du jobba med friluftsliv?
Direkt efter gymnasiet egentligen. Jag gick en ettårig diplomutbildning i outdooraktiviteter när jag var arton år och började sedan jobba på olika outdoorcenter runtom i Storbritannien och Spanien. Jag kände dock ganska snart att jag behövde mer utbildning och kvalifikationer så jag läste en fyraårig utbildning till utomhuspedagog. I slutet av den utbildningen så gick jag till Royal Air Force (RAF) som utbildare. Jag stannade med RAF i hela sexton år och specialiserade mig till ansvarig för äventyrliga utbildningar och överlevnadsutbildning. I mitt senaste jobb var jag t.ex. ansvarig för att leverera person-, team- och ledarskapsutbildning till alla som gick med i RAF – och till olika grupper av personal som redan tjänstgjorde, med utomhusarenan som utvecklingsverktyg.
I mitt jobb var jag också ansvarig för utvecklingen av olika årliga utländska expeditioner för RAF. Det kunde vara Ski Touring i Alperna, Sverige och Norge och Wilderness Open Canoe Expeditions i Sverige exempelvis. Samtidigt som jobbet var roligt så blev det mer och mer skrivbordsbundet och jag ville ha möjlighet att komma tillbaka till grunden av vad jag tyckte om och ville hålla på med – coaching och guidning utomhus!
När och hur utbildade du dig till Fjälledare?
Min träning började ju förmodligen redan när jag var arton, i och med den Mountain Leader-kurs jag läste då. Tre år innan jag skulle flytta till Sverige kontaktade jag det svenska Fjällsäkerhetsrådet för att få mer information om hur jag skulle kunna få den svenska certifieringen. Jag validerade mina tidigare kunskaper, kurser och loggade dagar och fick på så vis ut Fjälledarnormen. Det jag behövde fördjupa mig i som jag inte hade med mig sedan tidigare var den svenska Allemansrätten samt iskunskap. För att visa att jag tillgodogjort mig de kunskaperna så skrev jag en liten uppsats i ämnet.
Idag driver du ett eget företag, vad gör du där?
 Jag ville ha möjlighet att arbeta med både ledarutveckling och med att vara utomhus och guida. Mitt eget företag (Sweden Outdoors Coaching) låter mig göra båda delarna.  Idag är jag bland annat instruktör och tränare för Svenska Kanot Förbundet (SKF) och har hjälpt till med att introducera det nya europeiska paddelpasset (EPP) till Sverige (det som nu kallas Paddelpasset). Jag var också den som ledde de första utbildningarna i Sverige på röd nivå i forskajak och kanadensare. Relaterat till paddlingen så har jag nyligen blivit invald i styrelsen för International Sea Kayak Guides Association (ISKGA) i Sverige och ser fram emot att vara med och utveckla den organisationen.
Jag har haft många roliga uppdrag genom åren. Jag får återkommande en del utländska privatgrupper på besök som jag tar med på vinterturer och överlevnadsträning. Jag har också fortsatt att arbeta lite åt RAF och andra brittiska organisationer men som konsult. Lokalt här i Sverige så har jag arbetat med säkerhetsfrågor åt bland andra kommunen och Friluftsfrämjandet.
Tillsammans med Svenska Fjälledarorganisationen (SFLO) driver du nu ett arbete för att uppdatera den svenska Fjälledarutbildningen. Berätta mer om det?
2014 deltog jag i ett SFLO-möte i Åre och hörde då om ambitionen att få UIMLA-status och befogenhet att driva International Mountain Leader Training- och Assessment-kurser i Sverige. Eftersom jag hade vana sedan tidigare av UIMLA och deras utbildningssystem kändes det bra att kunna hjälpa organisationen framåt i detta. I dagsläget har Sverige ett kandidatmedlemskap i UIMLA och vi arbetar även på att parallellt med ett eventuellt medlemskap fortsätta att utveckla den svenska Fjälledarnormen till en version 2.0.
I dagsläget ser det ut som att det kommer att vara en ganska lång och utdragen process men jag arbetar på det tillsammans med styrelsen i SFLO och planen är att vi ska representera Sverige på ett internationellt UIMLA-möte i Slovakien i november 2018. Föreningen har fått medel från Naturvårdsverket för att driva frågan framåt.
